The Son of the Eternal Morn

The Son of the Eternal Morn
The Son of the Unconquered Might
The One whose cloak is endless praise
Whose throne will reign forever bright

The lips of gods do sing your name
The goodness and the majesty
You who disrobed and entered in
To shame and brokenness joyfully

Humiliation in your birth
The place, the time, the way, the night
You did not despise little things
God of God, light of very light

Standing beneath the sun you made
Being found in time the timeless One
Sailing upon the waves you wove
The earth gazed on Hyperion

The morning looked to have no end
Glory dwelling among darkened ones
Did we understand or comprehend?
I beheld He who overcomes

Brilliance dimmed that we might see
Your life as stirring as a storm
Upon this lifeless land you rained
Down and, behold, I was reborn

Brilliance dimmed that we might see
Your words as bright as precious stones
Stories to sooth the simple soul
To mend the hurt and broken bones

Brilliance dimmed that we might see
Your eyes as warming as a hearth
Compassion darting out as flames
To thaw this deadened, frozen heart

Brilliance dimmed that we might see
Your hands as light as summer air
Laying down your yoke upon our backs
We bear for all our days your care

The Son of the Eternal Morn
To Him Who Reigns the only Kin
The One whose rule will pass all days
His light was dimmed and yet undimmed

For those with eyes to pierce the worlds
What lightning struck upon that hill
The hordes of hell sprung upon you
When breath and flow of blood were still

Imagining victory, pomp, and feast
A stronger wine they tasted then
Your wrath, long mixed, was emptied out
A public sight they there became

Light as a burning star upon
Hell's gates fellmighty were his blows
Then all the bells of Hades tolled
For terrible radiance through it glows

If veils were torn, if tombs upturned
If darkness clothed the land around
What more below where light did go?
The snake's head, crushed, lies on the ground

Creation groaned, the heavens wept
Where was Eternal Morning's son?
My sister, weep no more, he comes
From empty tomb with souls He won

Then Pilate's guards were quick replaced
And angels see the firstborn raised
Hear his oath: "first among many"
He is the Seed forever praised

What sting remains for death to deal?
Does sin still reign ghoulish and grim?
What law is left for those redeemed?
All things are satisfied in him

He says I am to be His bride
He calls me precious in His sight
He says my name is now beloved
There is no doubt within his light

The Son of the Eternal Morn
The One who dwells outside the camp
The One who Death and Sin did slay
He is Lord - He is Heaven's Lamp
